Why Perplexity SEO, Gemini and Copilot need their own plan
Perplexity SEO, Gemini SEO and Copilot SEO share one goal: to make you a cited source when these assistants answer questions in your category. They sit together on this page because the content work overlaps. What separates them is where each engine gets its sources, and that decides where a technical gap will hurt you.
Perplexity: an answer engine built on citations
Perplexity answers nearly every question with numbered citations, and its users tend to be researchers who click through to verify. That can make it a valuable referral source for detailed B2B, technical and product-research topics.
Perplexity documents PerplexityBot as the crawler that surfaces and links websites in its results, and says it isn’t used to train foundation models. It also runs Perplexity-User for pages a user asks it to fetch. Beyond that, Perplexity hasn’t published everything about how it builds its index or ranks sources.
From observation, it rewards pages that state specific, verifiable facts, carry clear dates and come from domains with an established reputation in the topic. For recommendation questions, it often cites community discussions and review sites next to brand pages.
Gemini: Google’s index, with its own controls
Gemini, Google’s AI assistant, can ground its answers in Google Search. Your Google SEO work therefore carries over: indexing, rankings, entity understanding, Google Business Profile data and schema all shape what Gemini knows and cites.
The Gemini-specific decision is Google-Extended. Google says this control governs whether your content trains Gemini models and grounds answers in the Gemini apps, and that it doesn’t affect Google Search. Blocking it is a legitimate choice for some publishers, but it may reduce how Gemini uses your content, so we make sure the choice is deliberate.
Gemini and Google AI Overviews are separate products with different interfaces. We track them separately, even though both draw on Google’s index.
Copilot: Bing’s index, wherever Microsoft is
Microsoft Copilot optimization starts with Bing, because Copilot grounds its web answers in Bing search. Copilot appears in Windows, Edge, Bing and Microsoft 365, which puts it in front of many workplace users while they research.
Many sites have never verified Bing Webmaster Tools, let alone checked index coverage or submitted URLs through IndexNow. We fix those basics first, then align Bing Places and your business details so Copilot’s local and brand answers are accurate. Bing work also supports ChatGPT SEO, since ChatGPT search uses Bing among its providers.
Bing Webmaster Tools has also begun adding AI citation reporting, a rare source of first-party AI visibility data. Where it’s available for your site, we fold it into your monthly reporting.
Crawler rules that trip teams up
Three access mistakes are common. The first is a blanket “block AI bots” setting in a CDN, which can catch PerplexityBot along with training crawlers. The second is blocking or heavily throttling Bingbot to save server load, which cuts Copilot off at the source. The third is assuming Google-Extended controls AI Overviews, which it doesn’t.
We review your robots.txt, CDN and firewall rules together and confirm the result in server logs. Each engine’s crawler should reach your priority pages, and any training opt-outs should be deliberate choices rather than accidents.
One content plan, three access paths
You don’t need three versions of every page. The content that earns citations across all three engines is the same: direct answers near the top of each section, specific numbers and definitions, named sources, visible update dates and a consistent description of your brand. What changes by engine is access, indexing and which third-party sources carry weight in your category.
Your prompt panel shows each engine’s gaps separately. If Copilot misstates your pricing and Perplexity ignores your comparison page, those are different fixes, and we prioritize them by the audience each engine brings you.
