What answer engine optimization is
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of making a specific passage on your site the answer a search engine or assistant gives. If you have ever searched “what is AEO” and read a two-sentence definition at the top of Google, you have seen it at work. The engine didn’t just rank a page. It lifted an answer from one.
AEO applies to every surface that returns an answer instead of a list: featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes, voice assistants and, increasingly, AI Overviews and chat-based search. It is a focused part of SEO and one layer of our wider AI SEO services.
Where answer engines get their answers
Featured snippets almost always come from pages that already rank on the first page of Google for that query. Google picks the passage it judges most helpful and shows it with a link. People Also Ask works in a similar way, with each expanded question pulling a snippet from a ranking page.
Voice assistants usually read one answer aloud. For general questions they lean on search results and knowledge panels, and for local questions they rely heavily on business listing data. AI answers in Google, ChatGPT and Perplexity combine several sources and cite them. All of these reward the same thing: a clear, correct answer that can stand on its own.
Question research beyond keyword volume
Many questions that trigger answer features show little or no volume in keyword tools. They still matter, because they come from buyers close to a decision. We build a question list from People Also Ask, Search Console queries that contain question words, forums, your sales and support teams, and the prompts we test in AI engines.
Then we cluster the questions by topic and decide which page owns each cluster. One strong page that answers ten related questions usually beats ten thin pages that answer one each.
Writing answers machines can lift
Our answer-first pattern is simple. Use a heading that restates the question in natural language, then follow it with a direct answer of about 40 to 60 words that makes sense without the rest of the page. After that come the steps, examples, exceptions and evidence.
Format matters as much as wording. If Google shows a list for a query, a paragraph rarely wins it. If buyers want a comparison, a real HTML table beats a block of text, so we check the current answer format for every target query before a word is written.
Structured data, honestly
Schema markup helps machines understand a page, but its rich-result benefits have narrowed. Google now shows FAQ rich results only for a small set of authoritative government and health sites, and it has retired HowTo rich results. Speakable markup remains a beta feature for news publishers.
We still use FAQPage, Article, Product, Organization and other types where they accurately describe the page, because they reinforce meaning for search and AI systems. We just don’t promise they will change how your listing looks.
Voice search optimization now
Voice queries are longer and more conversational, and many have local intent, such as “who can fix a water heater near me today.” For those, accurate listings on Google Business Profile, Apple Business Connect and Bing Places matter more than on-page copy. Our Google Business Profile work covers that side.
Major assistants are also moving to generative models, which blurs the line between voice search and AI answers. The practical result is that short, accurate, self-contained answers now serve voice, snippets and AI responses at once.
How AEO fits with GEO and SEO
AEO wins the single answer. Generative engine optimization wins mentions and citations when AI engines build longer answers from many sources. Both depend on pages that rank, which is why we pair them with on-page SEO and content work rather than selling them in isolation.
