What AI visibility means
AI visibility is your brand’s presence inside answers written by AI: whether ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Google AI Overviews mention you, link to you and describe you correctly. Traditional rank tracking can’t see it, because there is no fixed list of positions to check. It has to be measured by asking the engines the questions your buyers ask, repeatedly, and scoring what comes back.
Why AI visibility is hard to measure
Three things make it harder than rank tracking. First, answers vary: the same prompt can name different brands on different runs, and results shift with location, account settings and model updates.
Second, first-party data is thin. Search Console includes AI Overviews and AI Mode in its Web totals without a separate filter, and most AI assistants offer publishers no reporting at all. Bing Webmaster Tools has started to report AI citation data, which helps for Copilot.
Third, clicks undercount influence. Many buyers read an AI answer, remember a brand and search for it later. That shows up as branded search or direct traffic, not as an AI referral.
Our prompt panel methodology
The prompt panel is the core of our tracking. It works like a fixed survey of the questions that matter to your business, run on a schedule.
Build it from real demand
We draw prompts from keyword and Search Console data, sales and support conversations, People Also Ask results and community threads. Then we add the constraints real buyers use, such as budget, company size, location or “vs” comparisons.
Tag and balance it
Each prompt is tagged by topic, product line and funnel stage, from problem-aware to brand-specific. A balanced panel stops branded prompts, which you usually win, from hiding weak performance earlier in the journey.
Run it consistently
We run each prompt several times per engine, in clean sessions and set to the target market’s location where the engine allows it. Every answer is scored for mentions, links, position, competitors named, sources cited and factual accuracy.
Keep it stable
The panel stays fixed from month to month. When your offer changes we add prompts, and we note every change so trends stay comparable.
Connecting visibility to revenue
Visibility only matters if it turns into business. We set up a dedicated AI assistants channel in GA4, using referrer domains and the utm_source=chatgpt.com parameter ChatGPT adds to many links, and connect it to leads and revenue. Server logs add another view: how often OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Bingbot and other crawlers fetch your priority pages.
We read these numbers alongside branded search trends. A rise in AI mentions can show up as more people searching for your name, even when AI referral clicks stay flat.
From tracking to action
Tracking without action is just reporting. Each monthly report ends with prioritized fixes: a page to rewrite, a crawler rule to correct, a review platform to strengthen or a factual error to trace. Our generative engine optimization and wider AI SEO teams implement them, or we brief your in-house team.
What tracking can’t tell you
No panel can reproduce every answer every user sees. Signed-in users, memory features and conversation history shape responses in ways an outside test can’t replicate. A prompt panel is a consistent sample, and that consistency is what makes month-to-month trends meaningful.
Most AI providers also don’t publish impression data the way Search Console does for Google. Until they do, AI visibility combines panel measurement with the hard data you already have: referrals, conversions, crawler logs and branded search.
Tools and LLM optimization
Plenty of generative engine optimization tools now automate prompt runs. We use tooling for scale, but a dashboard score is only as good as the prompt set, run schedule and review behind it. We stay tool-agnostic and give you the underlying data, so your numbers never depend on one vendor.
Start with a baseline
The fastest way to see where you stand is our Free AI Visibility Audit. It runs a sample of your buyer prompts across the major engines and shows your mentions, citation gaps and accuracy issues against key competitors, which becomes the baseline for everything that follows.
