How AI Overviews SEO works
AI Overviews SEO starts from a fact many teams miss: Google’s AI features are built on Google Search. AI Overviews and AI Mode retrieve from the same index as regular results, and Google says there are no additional technical requirements to appear in them. If a page is indexed and eligible for a snippet, it can be a supporting link, so the work is SEO aimed at a more demanding kind of result.
From SGE to AI Overviews and AI Mode
Google tested generative answers as the Search Generative Experience (SGE) in 2023, then launched AI Overviews widely in the US in May 2024. AI Overviews now appear above the regular results for many informational and research queries in many countries. AI Mode followed in 2025 as a separate, conversational experience where users ask follow-ups and get longer answers.
That distinction matters for Google AI Mode SEO. An AI Overview answers one query, while an AI Mode session can run across several turns, each one pulling in new sources.
How Google builds an answer
Google has described a technique called query fan-out, where its systems may issue multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources to build a response. A query like “best way to insulate an attic” might fan out into questions about materials, costs, building codes and installation. Relevant passages from the retrieved pages are then used to generate the answer, with links to supporting pages.
Two things follow. First, you can be cited for a query you don’t rank for, if you rank well for one of its sub-questions. Second, passage quality matters, because a section that answers one sub-question clearly is easier to use than a long page that circles the topic.
What we optimize
Eligibility and access
We check indexing, canonicals, rendering and snippet controls on every priority page. A stray data-nosnippet attribute or a max-snippet limit set years ago can quietly remove a page from consideration.
Passage-level answers
We restructure key pages so each section answers one question directly, then supports it with specifics. This is the same discipline as answer engine optimization, applied to the sub-questions that fan-out produces.
Topic coverage
We map the sub-questions around each target query and make sure your site answers them. Depending on the topic, that means one comprehensive page or a connected cluster with clear internal links.
Entities and trust
Structured data isn’t required, but it helps Google connect your pages to your brand, products and locations. We align schema with your Google Business Profile and Knowledge Panel, and we strengthen author credentials, sourcing and first-hand experience in line with Google’s guidance on helpful content.
Controls: what they do and don’t do
Google applies its normal snippet controls to AI features. nosnippet keeps a page’s text out of snippets and out of AI Overviews and AI Mode, data-nosnippet excludes specific sections, max-snippet caps length and noindex removes the page from Search entirely. Each one also affects your regular listing.
Google-Extended is often misunderstood. It governs Gemini training and grounding in the Gemini apps, not AI Overviews, so blocking it will not remove you from AI Overviews or AI Mode.
Measuring AI Overviews impact
Search Console includes AI Overviews and AI Mode data in the Web search type of its Performance report, with no separate filter. Its documentation also explains that an AI Overview occupies a single position, and every link inside it is assigned that same position. That makes average position a blunt tool for this kind of result.
To fill the gap, we track a fixed query set for AI Overview presence and citations and read it alongside Search Console clicks and CTR. Our AI visibility tracking service covers the method in depth, and our technical SEO team handles the eligibility fixes.
