Why Canadian SEO needs its own plan
Many Canadian businesses inherit a strategy built for the US: American spelling, US prices and keyword data from a much larger market. It rarely performs as expected. An SEO agency in Canada has to plan for two official languages, a large neighbor whose websites crowd Canadian results, and cities that behave very differently from one another.
Demand data shows how local the market is. “seo toronto” gets about 4.4k searches a month and “seo vancouver” about 2.9k, compared with about 2.4k for “seo agency canada” (Google Ads, 2026). Buyers look for city-level expertise first, and the same pattern holds in most service categories.
English and French: two keyword sets, one strategy
French-Canadian searchers do not simply type translated English queries. Vocabulary, spelling and even product names differ, and Quebec French differs from the French used in France. We research fr-CA keywords from scratch, then map each French page to its English counterpart.
On the technical side, that means hreflang annotations for en-CA and fr-CA (plus en-US if you also sell south of the border), a language switcher that links equivalent pages rather than the homepage, and French URLs, titles and schema. Quebec’s Charter of the French Language, strengthened by Bill 96, expects businesses serving Quebec to offer French, so this work supports compliance as well as rankings. Our international SEO service covers the full setup.
Winning Canadian results against US competitors
US retailers, publishers and service firms often rank in Canada because they have more links and content. You compete by sending stronger Canadian signals:
- a .ca domain or a clearly marked /en-ca/ section with hreflang
- prices in CAD, with shipping and duties explained
- Canadian spelling, measurements and provinces
- Canadian addresses, phone numbers and reviews
- links from Canadian media, associations and local partners
Each signal is small. Together they tell Google, and the AI assistants that draw on the same web, that your page is the right answer for a Canadian searcher.
Local SEO from Toronto to Vancouver
Canada’s population concentrates in a handful of metros, while many service businesses cover huge areas. We build local SEO around both realities: a Google Business Profile for each real location, unique city pages for places like Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, Ottawa and Montreal, and service-area settings for businesses that travel to customers. Multi-province brands can use our multi-location SEO workflows for pages, reviews and citations at scale.
Seasonality varies by region as well. Winter tire demand arrives at different times across the country, and Quebec requires winter tires from December 1, so content timing is planned province by province where it matters.
Privacy and measurement
Federal PIPEDA sets the baseline for personal data, with provincial laws in Alberta, British Columbia and Quebec. Quebec’s Law 25 is the strictest, with consent rules for tracking and profiling technologies. We set up consent-aware analytics, use Search Console as a privacy-safe baseline and explain in each report what is measured and what is modeled.
E-commerce for Canadian shoppers
Canadian shoppers compare domestic stores against US sites and Amazon.ca. Clear CAD pricing, delivery times and duty information give them reasons to buy from you. Our e-commerce SEO work covers category pages, product schema and Merchant Center feeds, and our Shopify SEO service handles stores running Shopify Markets across Canada and the US.
Working with a remote Canadian SEO partner
We work remotely with teams across Canada, in your time zone, with monthly reporting and no lock-in after the first three months. If you sell into the US as well, see our United States page. To find out where your site stands, request a free SEO audit.
