# Shopify SEO agency for stores that have outgrown the basics

> Shopify SEO agency fixing duplicate collection URLs, theme speed, app bloat and product schema, then scaling content and links for revenue.

Shopify handles hosting, SSL and sitemaps, but it leaves plenty of SEO problems for you. As a Shopify SEO agency, we fix duplicate collection paths, app bloat, thin collections and incomplete product schema, then grow the content and links that drive revenue.

## Common problems

- **Duplicate product paths:** Collection grids often link to /collections/x/products/y instead of the canonical /products/y. The canonical tag usually protects indexing, but internal links still send crawlers and signals to the wrong URL.
- **Apps that slow every page:** Each review widget, upsell tool and pop-up adds scripts. Apps that edited theme files directly can leave code behind after uninstalling, so the speed cost outlives the app.
- **Thin collections:** Many collections show a product grid and nothing else. They struggle against competitors with helpful copy, while tag pages and auto-generated vendor or type pages add even thinner URLs.
- **Schema gaps and conflicts:** Themes often output basic Product markup without identifiers, shipping or return details, while review apps add a second, conflicting Product block.

## What's included

- **Shopify SEO audit:** A crawl of products, collections, filters, blogs and pages, plus Search Console and theme code review, delivered as a prioritized fix list your developer or our team can ship.
- **Canonical internal linking:** Liquid edits so product grids, related-product blocks and search results link to canonical /products/ URLs rather than collection-scoped paths.
- **robots.txt.liquid and filter control:** Custom rules in robots.txt.liquid, plus noindex and canonical logic for filter, sort, tag and search URLs, while keeping the pages you want indexed crawlable.
- **App and speed audit:** An inventory of every app script and theme asset, with orphaned code removed, non-critical scripts deferred and images fixed to pass Core Web Vitals on product templates.
- **Collection page content:** Keyword-mapped intros, buying guides and FAQs added through metafields or sections, so your team can edit copy and products stay above the fold.
- **Product schema cleanup:** One consolidated Product JSON-LD block with brand, GTIN, offers, reviews, shipping and return policy, matched to the feed Shopify sends to Merchant Center.
- **Shopify Markets and hreflang:** Checks on the subfolders, domains and hreflang tags that Shopify Markets generates, plus translation quality review for English, Arabic and French versions.
- **Redirect management:** Redirect maps for renamed handles, deleted products and migrations from other platforms, imported in bulk and checked for chains.
- **Shopify Plus and headless support:** Guidance for expansion stores and Hydrogen or other headless front ends, including rendering, canonical, sitemap and redirect checks.

## Shopify technical faults we fix

Shopify is a solid SEO platform, but its fixed structure creates predictable problems. These are the ones we find in most Shopify audits, and how we fix each.

- **Collection-scoped product URLs:** Themes that use the within: collection Liquid filter link to /collections/x/products/y. We edit the product card snippet so internal links point to /products/y, the canonical URL.
- **Fixed /products/ and /collections/ prefixes:** Shopify doesn't allow custom URL folders on any plan. We work with the structure, using short handles, breadcrumbs and internal links to show hierarchy instead of fighting it.
- **Filter and sort URL sprawl:** Search & Discovery filters and sort_by parameters create many URL variations. Shopify's default robots.txt blocks some of them; we extend the rules in robots.txt.liquid where crawl data shows a need.
- **Tag pages and auto-generated collections:** Tag URLs, /collections/all and vendor or type pages can be indexed as thin duplicates. We noindex or consolidate them, or turn high-demand ones into real collections.
- **Variant parameter URLs:** ?variant= URLs usually canonicalize to the main product, which is normally right. Where a variant has its own search demand, we assess whether a separate product or collection is justified.
- **App bloat and leftover code:** We map every script to its source, remove orphaned snippets from uninstalled apps, move tools to app embeds where possible and replace heavy apps with lighter options.
- **Duplicate or broken schema:** Theme and app markup often conflict. We consolidate to one valid Product entity per page and add missing fields such as GTIN, brand, shipping details and MerchantReturnPolicy.
- **Deleted products returning 404s:** Shopify doesn't redirect deleted products automatically. We set up a discontinued-product workflow using Shopify's URL redirects, so links and rankings pass to the right page.
- **Thin blog articles:** Articles live under /blogs/name/, which is fine, but many stores publish short posts that never rank. We rebuild the blog around buying guides that link into collections.

## Shopify vs Shopify Plus SEO: what actually changes

| URL prefixes (/products/, /collections/) | Fixed | Fixed |
| robots.txt.liquid editing | Yes | Yes |
| International setup | Shopify Markets | Shopify Markets or separate expansion stores |
| Checkout customization | Limited | More options through checkout extensibility |
| Main SEO work | Theme, apps, content and schema | The same, plus multi-store governance and more complex integrations |

## Shopify SEO starts with the theme

Most Shopify SEO problems live in the theme and the apps, not in the admin settings. As a Shopify SEO agency, we start with a crawl and a review of your Liquid code, because a single snippet can decide how thousands of internal links behave. Only then do we move on to content, links and new collections.

Shopify gets a lot right. It generates XML sitemaps, adds canonical tags, serves pages through a global CDN and lets you edit handles, titles and meta descriptions. What it doesn't do is stop your theme from linking to the wrong URLs or your apps from slowing every page.

## Fixing collection-scoped product URLs

Every Shopify product can be reached at /products/handle and at /collections/collection-name/products/handle. Most themes canonicalize the second version to the first, so indexing is usually fine. But product grids that use the within: collection filter still link to the collection path, so crawlers keep fetching duplicates and internal link signals point at the wrong URL.

We change the product card and related-product snippets to link directly to /products/ URLs. If you want collection context in breadcrumbs, we build them from a primary collection stored in a product metafield instead of from the URL.

## Filters, tags and robots.txt.liquid

Search & Discovery filters and sort options add parameters to collection URLs. Shopify's default robots.txt blocks some of these, but not every combination, and tag-based filtering on older themes creates separate URLs that can be indexed. We review crawl data first, then add rules in robots.txt.liquid or noindex tags only where they are needed.

When a filter reflects real demand, such as a material or style people search for, we build it as a proper collection with its own copy instead of relying on a parameter URL.

## App bloat and Core Web Vitals

Apps are the biggest speed risk on most Shopify stores. Reviews, upsells, pop-ups, chat and tracking tools each add JavaScript, and older apps that edited theme files can leave code behind after uninstalling. We inventory every script, remove orphaned code, move tools to app embeds where possible and defer anything that doesn't need to load immediately. Image sizing and font loading on product templates usually come next.

## Collections that deserve to rank

Collections are your main ranking pages for category terms. We add a short intro above the grid and longer buying guidance and FAQs below it, using metafields or sections so your team can edit the copy without touching code. New collections are created only where keyword research shows demand.

## Sold-out and discontinued products

Sold-out products stay published on Shopify unless you hide them, which is usually right: the page keeps its rankings and shoppers can sign up for restock alerts. Problems start when products are deleted or set to draft, since both return a 404 and Shopify doesn't redirect them automatically. We set a simple rule: redirect discontinued products to a replacement or the closest collection, and retire the rest cleanly.

## Product schema, Merchant Center and AI shopping

Many themes output basic Product markup, and review apps often add a second block. We consolidate everything into one Product entity with brand, GTIN, offers, reviews, shipping and returns, and match it to the feed Shopify sends to Merchant Center. That consistency supports free listings, rich results and [AI shopping visibility](/services/ecommerce-seo/ai-shopping-visibility/) in ChatGPT and Google AI Mode.

## Shopify Plus SEO and headless builds

Shopify Plus SEO follows the same rules with more moving parts: expansion stores for international markets, larger catalogs and more integrations. For headless builds on Hydrogen or another framework, we check rendering, canonicals, sitemaps and redirects, since the theme no longer handles them for you. Moving to Shopify from another platform? ## FAQ

### Is Shopify good for SEO?

Yes, Shopify is a solid foundation for SEO. It handles hosting, SSL, XML sitemaps and canonical tags out of the box, and lets you edit titles, descriptions, handles and robots.txt. Its limits are a fixed URL structure, duplicate collection-scoped product paths, filter URLs and app bloat. Those are fixable, which is where most Shopify SEO work goes.

### What does a Shopify SEO agency do that SEO apps can't?

Apps can fill in meta tags, compress images or add basic schema, but they can't set strategy or fix theme code. A Shopify SEO agency edits Liquid templates, removes leftover app code, sets crawl rules, maps keywords to collections and products, writes content and earns links. Many stores actually need fewer apps after an audit, not more.

### Can we remove /products/ and /collections/ from Shopify URLs?

No. Shopify fixes the /products/, /collections/, /pages/ and /blogs/ prefixes on every plan, including Shopify Plus, and they can't be removed without going headless. They don't stop stores from ranking. We focus on what you can control: short, relevant handles, breadcrumbs, a clear collection hierarchy and internal links that point to canonical URLs.

### Do /collections/.../products/ URLs cause duplicate content?

They create duplicate paths, but most themes add a canonical tag pointing to the main /products/ URL, so Google usually indexes the right version. The remaining problem is internal linking: collection grids still send crawlers and link signals to the non-canonical path. We edit the product card snippet so every internal link points straight to the canonical URL.

### How do you edit robots.txt on Shopify?

Shopify generates a default robots.txt that already blocks checkout, cart and some filter and sort URLs. To change it, you add a robots.txt.liquid template to your theme and customize the rules there. We use it carefully, adding rules only where crawl data shows a problem, because one bad rule can block pages you want indexed.

### Is Shopify Plus SEO different from standard Shopify SEO?

The fundamentals are the same: URL structure, robots.txt.liquid, theme code and apps work the same way. Shopify Plus adds options that affect SEO indirectly, such as expansion stores for different markets, more checkout customization and more complex integrations. Plus projects usually involve bigger catalogs and more stakeholders, so governance and release QA take more of our time.

### Which Shopify SEO apps do we actually need?

Usually fewer than you have. A well-built theme plus targeted fixes covers most technical needs. A review app with valid markup, a well-configured Merchant Center feed and possibly an image optimizer are often enough. We audit every installed app for speed cost and overlap, and recommend removing tools that duplicate what the theme already does.

### How much do Shopify SEO services cost?

It depends on scope: catalog size, how many markets and languages you sell in, the state of your theme, and whether we implement changes or brief your developer. We don't sell fixed Shopify packages. We quote after an audit, so you pay for the work your store needs. A free SEO audit is a good first step.

### How long does Shopify SEO take to work?

Theme-level fixes like canonical internal links and crawl rules often show in Search Console within a few weeks of Google recrawling. Meaningful ranking and revenue movement typically takes three to six months, and six to twelve months for competitive collection terms. We plan seasonal collections well ahead of peaks like Black Friday so they have time to rank.

### Can you guarantee our Shopify store will rank #1?

No. No one can ethically guarantee #1 rankings, since Google controls its algorithm and competitors keep improving their stores too. We commit to transparency instead: a prioritized plan, a clear record of every change we ship, and monthly reports tying rankings and traffic to revenue in Shopify and Google Analytics.

### Do you work with our Shopify developer or partner agency?

Yes. Many Shopify stores already have a theme developer or a Shopify partner agency. We brief them with developer-ready tickets and code snippets, review changes on an unpublished theme before they go live, and stay out of design decisions that aren't ours. If you don't have a developer, we can implement theme changes directly.

### How do you report, and is there a contract?

We report monthly on organic revenue, rankings for priority collections and products, indexation, Core Web Vitals and Merchant Center health, with a log of the work shipped. There's no lock-in contract. Engagements start with an initial three-month period so changes can be crawled and measured, then run month to month.
